Janggar Ulam (bahasa Bali) adalah nama daun yang dalam bahasa Indonesia dikenal dengan nama Daun Salam. Janggar Ulam adalah pohon penghasil rempah yang digunakan dalam masakan Nusantara. Dalam bahasa Inggris dikenal dengan nama Indonesian Bay-Leaf atau Indonesia Laurel, sedangkan nama alamiahnya adalah Syzygium Polyanthum. Daun Janggar Ulam dikenal terutama sebagai tempah pengharum masakan di sejumlah negeri di Asia Tengara,

baik untuk masakan daging, ikan, sayur mayur maupun nasi. Daun ini dicampurkan dalam keadaan utuh, kering ataupun segar dan turut dimasak hingga masakan tersebut matang. Rempah ini memberikan aroma herba yang khas namun tidak keras. 

Secara tradisional, dau Janggar Ulam ini juga digunakan sebagai obat diantaranya asam urat, kolesterol tinggi, melancarkan peredaran darah,diabetes, dan lain-lain.

 

Janggar Ulam (Balinese) is a rather exotic spice which is called Daun Salam in Indonesian. They are common in Indonesian cuisines such as Sumatra, Jawa and even more Bali. In some books Janggar Ulam or Daun Salam are called Bay-Leaf or Indonesian Laurel. Botanically, they are called Syzygium Polyanthum. 

In some of South East Asia countries, Janggar Ulam are used in cooking for their distinctive flavor and fragrance. The leaves are often used to flavor stews, seafood, vegetables and even rice. They can be used either fresh or dried. In order to release the flavor, they must be fried or cooked for a while. This spice is aromatic and slightly sour or astringent, but quite weak.

Traditionally, Janggar Ulam are used to treat some diseases such as high blood sugar, cholesterol, migraine headache, diabetic, etc.
